Week 8 Reflect/ Discuss

Alice Walton

From your perspective and experience, what do you think are the most important elements that should be considered for the design and delivery of an assessment task / strategy, in a programme of study in HE? Why do you think this?

Provide a brief outline of different elements you think are most important to consider, and why (150 words). Post this to the discussion forum.

Comment on the posts of two fellow students, sharing any reflections that are prompted by their outlines and explanations.

From my perspective, I don’t have much experience personally designing and delivering assessment tasks so I look forward to the tasks this week in particular the reading. My following comments are based on my experience as a learner and also the reading from Module 1.

Elements that should be considered:

A students perspective: How are the student’s perspective of the assessment going to effect their learning? If students are anticipating an assessment which requires them to re-tell factual information then students may only feel a desire to have a surface approach to a subject.

Communication: We as teachers need to ensure that students are aware of what is required from them. Also, we need to ensure that students understand why a mark has been given.

Continuity: Does the assessment clarify if the learning outcomes have been met or not? I believe there needs to be continuity here to ensure that what is desired of students is the area which is assessed.

Variety: Is there a range of assessments to reflect different students learning styles in both formative and summative levels?

Inclusivity: Have we ensured that students different learning needs have been met? Do students have Individual Learning Plans (ILP)?
