Design Considerations

Purpose and Objectives

Instructional audio or video can be used for various purposes. It can introduce new topics, or ‘bridge’ units, or use audio / video as segmented, focused lectures.

Whatever the purpose, you need defined objectives for the content. Keep in mind what you want to accomplish with an audio or video podcast, and what you want your students to be able to accomplish once they have viewed it. Audio or video podcasts are of limited pedagogical value if they are used as a filler or just to show interesting information. It wastes your time and the students. They should be focused on the important content, to help students achieve learning objectives.

Know your audience

Where are your learners in the academic process? This information is critical when crafting the structure of the podcast. Do you need to start with foundational material or can you get right to the point? Do you need visuals or other support materials?

These are all questions that must be addressed when creating a quality audio or video podcast that is ‘fit for purpose’.

Length

Most instructional podcasts should be short, concise and last no more than 5-10 minutes. If a longer podcast is needed, it should be segmented or have planned breaks or pauses.

Interactivity

Your podcast should include several interactive features. When you develop your script, you can place these as necessary, and determine how it will impact the length of the video. Interactivity can include:

  • Moments of planned defined reflection;

  • Questions based on prior knowledge;

  • Questions based on video content;

  • Thought-provoking questions tied to current content;

  • Directions or guidance on the instructional material covered in the video (how it will be used, etc);

  • An assignment;

  • Interaction with readings.

Script

Maybe you need a script to help you when creating a podcast; maybe you don’t. This can vary depending on your personal preference. A script can help you to stay focused and achieve your purpose and objectives. It can also permit practice and refinement of content, and help you avoid 'uh' or 'ah' moments (having said that, these can also make it more natural, so you may want to put some back in).

Finally, it allows for closed captioning or text alternatives, which can be good for inclusivity.
