Week 10 – Reflect and Discuss. What Does Inclusive Teaching and Diversity Mean to You?

What Does Inclusive Teaching and Diversity Mean to You?

Post a picture that expresses what inclusive teaching and learning means to you.

Provide a short, written explanation of what the picture means to you (150 words).

This screen shot is from my colouring clay online zoom workshop. I believe it demonstrates inclusive teaching, firstly because the class was performed online, allowing participants to take part and not being restricted geographically. I had participants on this course from the UK, Belgium, Italy and Australia showing this method of teaching suited a diverse range of students in terms of race, ethnicity, and cultural background. I endeavoured to be inclusive and supportive by finding out prior knowledge, ensuring I was prepared and did not assume student’s abilities.

Depending on student’s preference, they could choose whether to have their camera on or off, ask questions in person or in the chat and respond after the lesson. The friendly chatty manor of the class encouraged peer and social learning and sharing.

I supplied students with emailed handouts, copies of my presentations and a recording of the lesson so that students who work at a different pace could prepare or reflect on the lesson. This also benefits students who may have undeclared learning needs or students with English as their second language.
